Sandwich cakes are popular and traditional dish in the Nordic countries, Poland and Hungary. Recently sandwich cakes have come to our country as well.
The dish is quite new. A sandwich cake was invented by Gunnar Sjödahl in 1961. It was happened in the Wedemark’s bakery in Ostersund.
By 1970 a sandwich cake became so famous that it could be often seen on many European tables.
Essentially, this is a kind of hybrid between sweet cake and the usual sandwich. Convenience of a sandwich cake is the fact that it can be prepared the day before.
The number of varieties of this cake is limited only by the imagination of a cook, and it requires from him to have good taste and imagination.
The principles for creating a sandwich cake is very simple. It consists of a base and the filling. The cake’s foundations are always layers of bread. The filling can be different, the main thing that all ingredients of the filling will go together well.
You can stick with the classic combination of Swedish products.
You also can use different types of bread for making a sandwich cake.
But because the cake is still a sandwich, and there are no strict rules for cooking it, and everyone prepares it according to their taste, then you can cook a sandwich cake your own way, depending on the wishes and preferences. The form of sandwich cakes may be circular, rectangular, square, etc.
To make a very simple sandwich cake with ham you will need:
- High round bread or bread for toast
- Sour cream
- Your favorite greens
You need to cut off the crust of a bread. Cut a high bread into several layers. Stir sour cream and mayonnaise. Spread the first layer with a mixture of sour cream and mayonnaise, and put on a top thin slices of ham and thinly sliced fresh cucumber and leaves of greenery.
Cover with another layer. Spread again mixture of sour cream and mayonnaise on a second layer and put slices of tomato and grated cheese, a little of minced garlic and herbs.
Spread again the next layer of bread with a mixture of sour cream and mayonnaise, and put slices of ham and cucumber.
Cover it with bread.
Spread the top and sides of the cake with mayonnaise and put in a fridge for few hours to soak. And before serving decorate the cake, using all your imagination.
